Disability Wales Launches Access to Politics Toolkit to Support Disabled People Entering Political Life
Disability Wales has unveiled the Access to Politics Toolkit, a practical resource designed to assist disabled people interested in engaging with political life across Wales. Developed in close collaboration with the Access to Politics Grassroots Network, the Toolkit draws on the lived experiences of disabled individuals navigating political participation, offering invaluable advice and resources.
Addressing Underrepresentation in Politics
Disabled people represent at least one fifth of the Welsh population, yet they remain significantly underrepresented among elected officials throughout Wales. This lack of representation means that many policies and services miss out on the vital insights that come from lived experience of disability.
The Access to Politics Toolkit aims to tackle some of the barriers disabled individuals face when considering involvement in politics. It also challenges common misconceptions about political participation. Designed with a step-by-step approach, the Toolkit supports disabled people at various points in their political journey, whether they plan to stand for office, run as independent candidates, join political parties, or engage in activism to advance disability rights.
Complementing the Access to Politics Charter
The launch of the Toolkit follows the introduction of the Access to Politics Charter, which outlines practical steps political parties can take to make political life more accessible and inclusive for disabled people.
Together, the Charter and Toolkit form a comprehensive package aimed at fostering change within political organisations and supporting disabled individuals navigating their own political pathways.
